Niata, directly translated, means "youth" and was originally created both to teach our traditional dances – such an important part of our culture and history – to the youth of our community, and to keep that youth connected to one another. Part of our mandate is to also present those dances outside of our community, to share Hellenic culture with all Canadians. We are a volunteer-run folk dance group operating under the Hellenic Society of Calgary. The program is for children from 6-18 years. During its 26 year history, Niata members have performed at a variety of municipal and national events, including the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Its original students now have children of their own in the program. It is one of the longest running children’s programs in Calgary.

Important Dates

Hello Parents and Dancers,

We are so appreciative and moved by your interest in when our Greek dance program will start up again!

Niata has been serving the Greek Community of Calgary since 1985 and we want to thank everyone that has supported us and participated over the past 35 years. We want to return to the dance floor as much as you do because it's important to continue this culturally rich tradition with our youth and to strengthen our community.

Unfortunately, the Alberta Health Guidelines have made it impossible for Niata to start classes for the time being. Staying two to three metres apart from fellow dancer isn’t conducive to Greek dancing. We are hoping that the January 2021 provincial guideline will favour us.

We will announce if anything should change sooner, and wish you a safe and healthy rest of 2020.

Dance groups will initially be separated as follows:

LEVEL 1: Grade 1 & 2

LEVEL 2: Grade 3 & 4

LEVEL 3: Grade 5 & 6

LEVEL 4: Jr. High

LEVEL 5: High School

Changes to this outline may be necessary once we establish the number of students in each group. Groups are set based on age/grade. Remember that this is an opportunity for our children to build friendships with others in our community. If you have an issue or concern, please approach me directly and leave the teachers to teach their class.

Please pass this email onto anyone that may be interested in having their children learn Greek dance. The Niata program is for students between Grades 1-12. Classes are Saturdays from 12:30PM-1:30PM.

Please contact if you have any comments, questions or require additional information.

The wonderful and dedicated volunteer dance teachers and I look forward to seeing you this Saturday for another great year of Greek dancing and friendship!
