Children’s Greek Dance Program

Greek Celebration

Niata

Niata directly translated means “youth” and was originally created both to teach our

traditional dances – such an important part of our culture and history – to the youth of our community, and to keep that youth connected to one another. Part of our mandate is to also present those dances outside of our community, to share Hellenic culture with all Canadians. We are a volunteer-run folk dance group operating under the Hellenic Society of Calgary. The program is for children from 6-18 years. During its 26 year history, Niata members have performed at a variety of municipal and national events, including the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. Its original students now have children of their own in the program. It is one of the longest running Hellenic children’s programs in Calgary

Preregistration for the year 2011/2012 will take place on Monday June 20 at

6 p.m. during costume return. The cost is $50 per child for members, $75 for non-members.

We also require a costume deposit of $150.00 post-dated for June 30th 2012, as well as a $20 costume maintenance fee at the time of first costume pick-up.

The first day of Niata for the new season will be October 17th. The program ends after Greek festival. Classes are held Monday nights from 6 to 7 p.m.

Adult Recreational greek Dance Group

Greek dance classes for adults are held Monday nights from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and run from October to June, generally following the Niata dance schedule.  The cost is $50 for members and $80 for non-members.  Dances from all regions of Greece are taught. This Greek dance class is a great workout, a fantastic way to make new friends and a fun way to learn about the Greek culture through dance. It is open to anyone over the age of 18 and all levels of dance experience, including never having danced before.
